Sebagian besar pelumas vagina ini ternyata menjadi racun bagi sperma.
Bagi pasangan yang sedang mencoba hamil sebaiknya tidak menggunakan
pelumas apa-apa karena pelumas musuh utama sperma.
Pelumas vagina ini tidak hanya digunakan untuk mengatasi kekeringan vagina selama berhubungan, tapi juga mempermudah penyisipan alat-alat medis terutama saat digunakan selama perawatan kesuburan seperti saat inseminasi.
Vagina kering adalah masalah yang dapat mempengaruhi perempuan dari segala usia, meskipun biasanya lebih umum terjadi setelah perempuan menopause. Vagina kering dialami oleh sekitar 17 persen perempuan antara usia 18 sampai 50 tahun dan dengan jumlah yang lebih tinggi dari wanita postmenopause di atas 51 tahun.
Namun dari 4 pelumas vagina yang diuji hanya satu yang bersifat non-spermicidal, spermicidal adalah agen yang menghancurkan membran sperma dan menurunkan motilitas atau pergerakan sperma.
"Pelumas vagina yang tersedia secara komersial di Swiss cukup beracun untuk ejakulasi sperma," ujar Dr Alfred Senn, peneliti dari Foundation for Andrology, Biology and Endocrinology of Reproduction, seperti dikutip dari Reuters, Selasa (16/11/2010).
Dr Senn dan koleganya memantau kelangsungan sperma selma 24 jam setelah terpapar pelumas vagina yang diklaim sebagai non-spermacidal. Setelah 24 jam diketahui 3 dari 4 gel yang digunakan telah mengurangi gerakan sperma hingga 88 persen.
Para peneliti menemukan senyawa yang terdapat di dalam pelumas tersebut bersifat sedikit keasaman, sehingga akan menciptakan suatu kondisi yang buruk bagi sperma. Peneliti juga mencatat kemungkinan dampak langsung lainnya dari gel pelumas ini yang dapat membuat sperma menjadi lambat.
Karena mempengaruhi pergerakan dan juga dapat menjadi racun bagi sperma, kemungkinan penggunaan pelumas vagina ini nantinya akan mempengaruhi kesempatan seseorang untuk hamil.
Dr Mary Rosser dari Albert Einstein College of Medicine di New York City menyarankan bagi pasangan yang sedang mencoba hamil sebaiknya tidak menggunakan pelumas apa-apa.
"Pasangan harus menyadari potensi toksisitas (racun) dari pelumas vagina yang selama ini tersedia secara komersial. Karena pelumas ini biasanya dirancang untuk mengatasi kekeringan vagina, tetapi mereka mungkin tidak dirancang bagi pasangan yang sedang berusaha untuk hamil." ungkap Dr Senn.
