Penelitian menunjukkan ketika anak beranjak remaja, mereka cenderung tidur lebih larut dan bangun lebih siang, ini mungkin disebabkan oleh perubahan hormon yang terjadi di masa puber.
Persoalannya adalah, kata Foster, perubahan pola tidur dan bangun terganggu oleh pemakaian ponsel atau tablet.
"Mereka juga mengakses Facebook dan saling mengirim pesan hingga dini hari, yang membuat waktu tidur mereka semakin sedikit," katanya.
Situasi ini mendorong Janse Ansell, seorang psikolog mendirikan yayasan sosial Sleep Scotland, yang mendorong remaja memiliki pola tidur yang sehat.
Ansell melakukan kajian di tiga sekolah di Skotlandia, yang hasilnya memperlihatkan 52% remaja kurang tidur dan sekitar 20% mengaku tertidur di kelas setidaknya sekali dalam dua pekan terakhir.
