Ngarai besar di bawah lapisan es

Bentuk geografis ngarai yang juga bekas sungai ini bertahan selama jutaan tahun.

Salah satu ngarai terbesar di dunia telah ditemukan oleh para peneliti secara tidak sengaja.

Ngarai sepanjang 800 km itu ditemukan dibawah lapisan es kawasan Greenland dengan kedalaman 800 meter.

Menurut para peneliti ngarai tersebut terbentuk karena sebelumnya lokasi itu merupakan sebuah sungai besar yang ada 4 juta tahun lalu sebelum es tiba di kawasan tersebut.
Para peneliti menemukan keberadaan ngarai itu secara tidak sengaja saat mereka sedang melakukan penelitian perubahan iklim dengan memetakan batuan dasar di Greenland menggunakan radar.
Lembaga The British Antartic Survey mengatakan penemuan ngarai besar yang belum pernah dilihat sebelumnya ini adalah sesuatu yang luar biasa.
Ngarai yang ditemukan ini lebih panjang dari Grand Canyon di Arizona, AS.

Pertama dilihat manusia

Profesor, David Vaughan dari Britis Antartic Survey, BAS mengatakan kepada BBC News bahwa temuan ini menunjukan masih banyak hal yang belum terungkap di kawasan Greenland.
"Lapisan es di Greenland dan Antartika masih menyembunyikan banyak hal. Temuan ini sangat mengejutkan karena Greenland merupakan kawasan yang tidak besar untuk ngarai sebesar ini," kata Vaughan.
"Mengetahui bahwa ngarai itu bisa bertahan dengan bentuknya setelah mengalami perubahan iklim dan diselimuti es seperti ini adalah sesuatu yang penting."
Temuan menunjukan bahwa untuk pertama kalinya ngarai ini bisa dilihat oleh manusia karena ketika terbentuk empat juta tahun lalu manusia belum tercipta di bumi.
Memamami kondisi es di Greenland memang menjadi penting jika dikaitkan dengan perubahan iklim.
Jika es di kawasan Greenland mencair maka cairan esnya akan menaikan ketinggian air laut global hingga tujuh meter dan akan menggenangi banyak kota utama.

"The findings indicate that for the first time this canyon can be seen by humans because when it formed four million years ago humans have created on earth .Memamami ice conditions in Greenland has become important if it is linked to climate change .If the ice in the Greenland ice melt, the liquid will raise global sea levels by seven meters and will inundate many major cities .
