Antonio Santi Giuseppe Meucci, (lahir 13 April 1808 – meninggal 18 Oktober 1889 pada umur 81 tahun) adalah seorang penemu berkebangsaan Italia yang penemuannya merupakan alat komunikasi modern yang sangat dibutuhkan oleh masyarakat sekarang ini untuk kehidupan sosial yaitu telepon. Umumnya penemu telepon yang lebih dikenal masyarakat adalah Alexander Graham Bell, tetapi sepertinya sejarah harus ditulis ulang karena adalah seorang imigran dari Firenze (Florence), Italia yang bernama Antonio Meucci yang telah menciptakan telepon pada tahun 1849 dan mematenkan hasil karyanya pada tahun 1871.
Antonio Meucci lahir di San Frediano, dekat kota Firenze pada tahun 1808. Dia adalah lulusan Akademi Kesenian Firenze, lalu bekerja di Teatro della Pergola sampai tahun 1835, dan kemudian ditawari pekerjaan di Teatro Tacon in Havana, Kuba dan berimigrasi di sana bersama istrinya. Pada waktu senggangnya Antonio Meucci suka melakukan penyelidikan terhadap sesuatu dan menciptakan barang-barang baru tanpa putus asa. Meucci telah mengembangkan cara menggunakan setrum listrik untuk menyembuhkan penyakit dan menjadi populer karenanya.
Pada tahun 1850, dia pindah ke Staten Island, New York. Pada saat itu Meucci jatuh miskin, tetapi masih terus menyempurnakan alat yang telah diciptakannya yaitu telepon. Dikarenakan ia sakit keras dan perekonomian yang sulit, istrinya terpaksa menjual beberapa alat-alat ciptaannya hanya seharga enam dolar untuk biaya pengobatan. Setelah sembuh, Meucci bekerja keras siang dan malam untuk kembali membuat alat-alat ciptaannya. Pada tahun 1871, disebabkan tak cukup uang untuk membayar paten telepon, ia hanya membayar paten sementara yang berlaku untuk setahun dan harus diperpanjang pada tahun selanjutnya.
Meucci mencoba untuk mendemonstrasikan potensi "telegraf berbicara" ini serta membawa model dan segala keterangannya pada wakil ketua perusahaan telegraf Western Union. Setiap kali Meucci hendak menemui wakil ketua ini, Edward B.Grant selalu mengatakan bahwa dia tak ada waktu. Dua tahun kemudian, saat Meucci meminta kembali semua materi telepon di perusahaan tersebut, ternyata mereka hanya mengatakan telah "hilang".
Pada tahun 1876, Alexander Graham Bell menyandang nama sebagai penemu telepon. Setelah Meucci mengetahuinya, ia memanggil seorang pengacara untuk memprotes pada Kantor Paten Amerika Serikat di Washington. Meucci mengalami kekalahan untuk kasus ini. Setelah adanya permusuhan antara Alexander Graham Bell dengan Western Union baru terungkap bahwa Bell sebelumnya telah menyetujui membayar duapuluh persen keuntungan komersil atas "penemuannya" selama 17 tahun kepada Western Union. Antonio Meucci wafat pada tanggal 18 Oktober 1889.
Lebih dari seabad dan di seluruh penjuru dunia, Alexander Graham Bell dikenal sebagai penemu telepon. Tetapi pada tanggal 11 Juni 2002 di kongres Amerika Serikat, Antonio Meucci ditetapkan sebagai penemu telepon.

Antonio Meucci died on October 18, 1889 .
More than a century and in all corners of the world , Alexander Graham Bell is known as the inventor of the telephone . But on June 11, 2002 in the U.S. congress , Antonio Meucci as the inventor of the telephone set .
