Patung Liberty, kebanggaan dan simbol Kota New York, ternyata bukan dibuat di New York. Patung tersebut, yang ternyata di desain oleh pemahat Prancis, Frederic-Auguste Bartholdi pertama kali dibangun dan disusun di Prancis pada tahun 1874. Setelah selesai dibuat di Prancis, patung tersebut dibongkar, dan dikemas dalam 200 muatan besar untuk dikirim ke Amerika. Patung Liberty selanjutnya disusun kembali di Bedloe’s Island di mulut pelabuhan Kota New York. Sedemikian lama proses pengepakan ini, hingga patung Liberty baru bisa diresmikan pada tanggal 28 Oktober 1886, sepuluh tahun setelah HUT kemerdekaan Amerika yang ke-100.
Dengan tinggi 46 meter dan berat 204 ton, Patung Liberty berdiri diatas landasan setinggi 46 meter. Bagian dalamnya diisi oleh rangka baja, sementara bagian luarnya dibuat dari plat tembaga. Rangka baja patung Liberty, dibuat dan dirancang oleh Gustave Eiffel, orang yang juga merancang dan membangun Menara Eiffel.
