Para ilmuwan menemukan spesies baru dinosaurus dengan kepala bertulang tebal. Spesies ini diperkirakan adalah yang tertua di Amerika Utara dan kemungkinan tertua di dunia.

Binatang pemakan tumbuhan ini memiliki tengkorak berbentuk seperti kubah di kepala yang mungkin berfungsi untuk menyeruduk dinosaurus lain ketika berkelahi.
Dinosaurus jenis ini, atau semacam kadal berkepala tebal, secara ilmiah disebut pachycephalosaurus.
Mereka adalah sekelompok aneh dinosaurus herbivora yang memiliki kubah tebal yang dibentuk dari tulang padat dengan tebal lebih dari 10cm di bagian atas tengkorak.
Temuan baru ini diperkirakan berasal dari masa 85 juta tahun yang lalu.
Uniknya, dinosaurus jenis ini hanya seukuran anjing besar dengan berat 40kg, berjalan dengan dua kaki.

Banyak jenis serupa akan ditemukan

Para ilmuwan yakin ada banyak dinosaurus kecil lain yang mirip dengan Acrotholus audeti ini menunggu untuk ditemukan.
"Kita bisa memprediksi bahwa banyak spesies dinosaurus baru yang kecil seperti Acrotholus sedang menunggu untuk ditemukan oleh para peneliti yang bersedia untuk memilah-milah banyak tulang kecil yang mereka ambil di lapangan," kata Dr Michael Ryan, kurator paleontologi vertebrata di Cleveland Museum of Natural History.
