The oldest stars in the universe - Bintang tertua di alam semesta

Bintang 'tertua' ini terletak sekitar enam tahun cahaya dari Bumi.

Para ilmuwan di Australian National University mengatakan telah menemukan bintang tertua di alam semesta, yang terbentuk lebih 13,6 miliar tahun yang lalu, tidak lama setelah Big Bang.

Penemuan ini akan memungkinkan para astronom meneliti komposisi kimiawi bintang-bintang pertama di alam raya ini.

Salah seorang ilmuwan yang menemukan bintang tertua, Dr Stefan Keller, mengatakan peluang menemukan bintang tertua adalah 1 berbanding 60 juta.
"Saya sangat kaget tapi juga senang. Ini seperti menemukan jarum di tumpukan jerami," kata Dr Keller.
Ia menjelaskan pencarian bintang tertua antara lain didasarkan dengan warna yang tampak dari bintang tersebut.
"Hanya dengan melihat warnanya kami tahu mana bintang muda, mana bintang yang jauh lebih tua," katanya.
"Kami juga bisa memperkirakan kandungan besi. Makin banyak besinya, makin muda usianya," papar Dr Keller.
Ia menggambarkan penemuannya ini sebagai 'kapsul waktu' yang bisa memberi banyak informasi tentang bintang-bintang pertama di jagad raya.
Bintang kuno ini terletak sekitar enam ribu cahaya dari Bumi.

Scientists at the Australian National University say they have found the oldest stars in the universe , which is formed over 13.6 billion years ago , not long after the Big Bang .
This discovery will allow astronomers examined the chemical composition of the first stars in the universe .
One of the scientists who discovered the oldest star , Dr Stefan Keller , said the chances of finding the oldest stars is about 1 in 60 million .

He described this discovery as a ' time capsule ' which could give a lot of information about the first stars in the universe .
