Freshwater crayfish, or crustacean can also have emotions, including anxiety, according to a study published in the journal Science.
Researchers in France found that crayfish can feel uneasy, emotions that were previously considered too complicated for these animals.
Scientists say if the lobster is faced with a difficult situation, the animal will move more cautiously including hiding in the darker parts of the aquarium.
It follows a number of studies that indicate crustaceans can also feel the pain.
Some experts say the seafood industry need to review how to treat these animals.
Dr. Daniel Cattaert from the University of Bordeaux who conducted the study said, "The crayfish including primitive and there have been hundreds of millions of years."
"Research on the possibility of these animals feel anxiety seemed impossible before, but with our experiments are increasingly convinced that it is a fact."
To investigate this possibility, the scientists put the crustaceans to the conditions that create fear by electrical waves.
The animal was placed in a cross-shaped tanks, two of which are in the dark, and the other two bright.
Dr. Cattaert said the animal went to all the places in the tank, but when there is a surge of electricity, crustaceans choose a dark place.
