Lahir di Lousville Kentucky Amerika Serikat 17 Januari 1942, nama aslinya Cassius Marcellus Clay Jr. Di kenal publik dengan Nama Muhammad Ali setelah menjadi muslim. Dia memulai karir dalam dunia tinju sejak usia 12 tahun. Ia membukukan rekor 108 kali menang dan 8 kali kalah dalam pertandingan tinju amatir. Puncak karir dalam dunia tinju amatir di ukirnya ketika meraih mendali emas kelas berat di olimpiade Rima Italia tahun 1960.
Pulang dari olimpiade Muhammad Ali segera terjun dalam dunia tinju profesional. Dia meraih kemenangan demi kemenangan pada awal karirnya dan mendapat julukan Louisville Lip dan Mighty Mouth. Pada tahun 1964 Ali telah mencatat kemenangan 19 kali dan menantang juara dunia Sonny Liston. Dalam pertandingan dramatis, Liston tak mampu beranjak dari sudutnya pada ronde 7.
Ali memeluk agama Islam tahun 1964 dan bergabung dengan organisasi Nation of Islam serta mengganti nama menjadi Muhammad Ali. Tahun 1967 ia melakoni pertandingan revans melawan Liston, namun pertarungan kembali dimenangkan Ali. Akhir tahun 1970 Ali kembali ke atas ring menantang juara dunia Joe Frazier., Namun Ali kalah di ronde 15. Ali kemudian kembali menantang Joe Frazier sebelum menantang George Foreman pada bulan Januari 1974 di Madison Square Garden New York. Saat itu gelar juara di pegang George Foreman setelah mengalahkan Joe Frazier. Pertarungan tersebut dimenagkan Ali dengan Angka Mutlak. Selanjutnya Ali menantang Foreman yang dilangsungkan di Kinshasa Zaire (Kongo). Pertarungan diwarnai intrik dan strategi mengagumkan. Di awal ronde Ali dibombardir pukulan Foreman, namun setelah Foreman keletihan, Ali balik menyerang habis-habisan sehingga akhirnya KO pada ronde ke delapan.
Setelah mempertahankan gelas selama tiga kali, Ali menyatakan siap bertarung kembali melawan Frazier di Manila Philipina. Di hadapan 28.000 penggemar tinju dan 700 juta penonton televisi, Ali mengalahkan Frazier dalam pertarungan brutal yang dijuluki “sensasi Manila”. Pertarungan tersebut mengukuhkan keduanya sebagai petarung paling tangguh di dunia. Ali mempertahankan gelarnya enam kali antara tahun 1976 dan 1978. Ia kehilangan gelar setelah dikalahkan Leon Spinks di Las Vegas Nevada. Namun pada tahun tersebut ia kembali mengalahkan Spinks dalam 15 ronde pertarungan ulang. Ali pensiun tahun 1979 tetapi mencoba come back tahun 1980 menantang Lary Holmes. Ia kalah dari Holmes dan masih satu kali lagi bertarung melawan Trevor Berbick pada tahun 1981.
Namun Ali tetap di ingat sebagai salah satu atlet paling terkenal di dunia. Rekor tinju profesionalnya 56 kali menang, 37 kemenangan KO dan 5 kali kalah. Setelah pensiun, Ali membaktikan dirinya untuk kegiatan amal, kemanusiaan serta berdakwah di seluruh dunia.
